Marvel Studios need a hit this go ’round. After the dismal reception that Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer received and the abortion that was Ghost Rider hit theaters, Paramount Pictures collaborates with the comic giant to adapt Iron Man for big screen release on May 2nd, 2008.

Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Tony Stark/Iron Man — the billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build his captors a devastating weapon. Although, The Mandarin is not listed as a potential villain — Jeff Bridges plays rival, Obadiah Stane, the business executive who stole Stark Enterprises from Tony Stark.

When Stark escapes from his captors, he uncovers a dastardly plot that threatens the entire world. Tony Stark becomes Iron Man and vows to save the world from its uncertain doom. The Jon Favreau [Deep Impact, The Break-Up] directed film pulls heavy from the Oscar pool as Terrence Howard and winner, Gwyneth Paltrow round out this big cast.
