Steve Powers, perhaps better known to many of you as graffiti legend Espo, has followed the footsteps of some of his contemporaries and made the transition to renowned gallery artist. He currently is showing a collection of his work in the Morris Gallery at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and just today released Steve Powers is a Studio Gangster, which chronicles some of his work over the last five years.

Powers made his name in the graffiti scene as ESPO before more than a few of you were even born, and has always played with the imagery, letter form, and mentality of advertising. He has gone on to become part of advertisements himself, having worked with Calvin Klein and Nike, among others, on various product designs.

His own work continues to follow a modernistic consumerist line of thought, and while I haven’t yet made the trip to Philly for the exhibition, I’m looking forward to making the trip sometime before it ends on January 27th. If you’re still looking for the Powers experience, but can’t make it to the show, he has prints available on his site or you can order a copy of his new book here.
