We Are The True Believers
Friday, January 11, 2008 | Author: Jon LedfordFew people have had even half the impact on the American cultural landscape as Stan Lee. As a creator to pretty much every Marvel Comics character that matters (sorry, Typeface) that you can think of, it’s hard to imagine a world without his genius. It should go without saying then, that his influence on modern artists is immeasurable. With that in mind, Gallery 1988 recently unveiled Under the Influence: A Tribute to Stan Lee, with contributions from a huge number of incredible artists.

Opening this past Tuesday to a line extending around the block, with a special appearance by Stan the Man himself, this is a truly special event for everyone involved. Any art show with a great list of exhibitors including Angry Woebots, Steve Purcell, Ekundayo (pictured above), Luke Chueh, Matt Dangler (top picture), Greg “Craola” Simkins (below), and KMNDZ (bottom picture), among others would be a great treat, but with each artist taking inspiration from the likes of Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The X-Men, and all the other Lee creations, it really takes this event over the top.

Gallery 1988 has a listing and preview of the pieces in the show here, but you really owe it to yourself to make it out to this show before it ends on February 1st. There’s something to be said for the texture and visual impact of great art that even the biggest computer monitor can’t compete with.
