Neckface Heads Down Under
Thursday, January 24, 2008 | Author: Jon LedfordControversial street artist Neckface is taking his unmistakable style to Australia for a gallery show presented by Vans. Whether or not you’re into his style and technique, there’s no denying his hustle. He has managed to segue wall scrawling into a gallery setting and worked with a variety of respected skate companies along the way.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s part of his installation for the Closed Casket show last October. While he may not be as technically refined as many have come to expect of a grafiti artist (which makes no sense) his style is immediately recognizable even when applied to sculpture installations instead of the usual irreverent markings.

Even still, with pieces like the one above, it’s clear Neckface shines brightest in the urban environment. It will be interesting to see what the immediate future holds for this exhibition, not to mention the long term future of his and other similar artists transitioning from the come as you are world of public expression into the far more politicized scene of gallery exhibitions and product design.

Death Becomes You runs through the middle of February at the Don’t Come Gallery in Melbourne. The show opens tomorrow at 6:30 with an opening reception and many pieces for sale. If you happen to be in the area, be sure to check it out!
