If the east coast vs. west coast debate ever comes to a tiebreaker, I’m pretty sure the number of incredible week long hardcore tours the east coast gets in comparison to the west coast will nudge us up over the top. Last night was a perfect example of just such a tour as Surroundings, I Rise, Meltdown, Wake Up Call, and the almighty Bane took the Ottobar stage as the perfect remedy to a serious case of the Mondays.

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

20080421fpedx_main.jpg

The DC/MD/VA area has been blessed recently with a number of stores opening or expanding into the area. You can add yet another name to the list as the boys from Pedestrian have expanded their turf from Philly south of the Mason Dixon into Baltimore. The shop opened quietly this past Saturday with a grand opening event in the works for the near future. I checked things out today and was impressed with the clean look and custom shelving, not to mention the excellent stock list.

Philadelphia, Stussylvania

While the arrival of Stussy Chapter Stores into DC, Toronto, and Vegas was highly anticipated and publicized, the brand’s arrival into the City of Brotherly Love has been a pleasant surprise. Stussy will take over the second floor of Ubiq, which has seen a serious return to form after reopening fairly recently themselves. Of course, no Stussy opening would be complete without a celebratory tee, and this one may well be the best of the recent bunch.

Attack Of The Four Foot Dunny

Friday, April 4th, 2008

20080331ftara_main.jpg

While Kidrobot prepares an updated (and hopefully roomier) New York location, they have set up a temporary Pirate Store, which has already played host to several events, with the most recent being a live painting of a massive 48″ Dunny by Tara McPherson. Tara created an awe inspiring figure in her trademark style and even stuck around to sign and sketch for fans who turned out for the event. It’s great to see Kidrobot encouraging people to appreciate the craft of the artists, since many seem to get more wrapped up in ratios and after market value. Check out some more pictures, including the finished piece after the jump.

Preaching The New Media Gospel

20080302farif_main.jpg

There is something to be said about faith. Once you have a hold of it, you’re either a slave or a motivator. Arif Gursel, who serves as a technical evangelist at Microsoft, interestingly tip-toes the line between those two worlds. His name is associated with Microsoft platforms such as Windows Vista, Xbox360 and Zune. With his tech savvy mind aligned with the culture of hip hop, Gursel looks to push the impact of digital media technology via the entertainment industry.
